Before your next appointment, the public register confirms a therapist is registered, in good standing, and authorized to practise — and shows you:

How regulation protects you
A regulated profession — held to a public standard.
Some health professions in Ontario are regulated and some are not. Massage therapy is regulated: CMTO oversees RMTs to protect the public interest. That means a Registered Massage Therapist has met the province’s requirements, follows enforceable standards, and is accountable through a formal complaints process.

These titles are protected by law — in both official languages.
Only CMTO registrants may use them. If someone offers “massage therapy” without registration, they are practising illegally.

What to expect
Your appointment, your comfort.
A Registered Massage Therapist should explain your treatment, ask for your consent before and during the session, and respect your privacy and draping at every step. You can ask questions, decline any part of treatment, and stop at any time.
Your safety
Zero tolerance for abuse.
CMTO has zero tolerance for sexual abuse by RMTs.
Sexual abuse of a client by a massage therapist is never acceptable. Funding for therapy and counselling is available to clients who have been sexually abused by an RMT — and you can raise a concern at any time.
Concerns & complaints
If something isn’t right, tell us.
Every complaint is reviewed impartially, and fairly to everyone involved. You don’t need to be certain that a rule was broken — if something felt wrong, the College wants to hear from you.
